Our team of arborists, landscapers and nurserymen of AAA Tree & Landscaping have been admiring, studying, propagating, grafting, growing, transplanting and maintaining trees for over 25 years. We are proud of our commitment to beautify and enrich our community.
Our nursery specializes in fast growing shade trees. We grow both named cultivars of trees as well as local, native species. Whenever possible, we suggest local, native tree species which tend to offer disease resistance and are unlikely to have issues with our local alkaline soils. Looking for something specific? Give a quick call to the number above.
The process starts with the selection of healthy, native, locally grown and harvested seed. Each year, Tom, the arborist and owner, seeks out seed from specific trees. Seeds are gathered from native trees with one or more of the following attributes; rapid growth, precosity (early acorn production), superior fall color and perfect form. The intent is to pass on those genetics to a tree you will own. Each seed is individually labeled and tracked to ensure that the best parent trees are selected. Tom goes back, year after year to the trees who have a track record of producing superior offspring with specific traits. In the same respect that Lebron James is more likely to have a son in the NBA than Danny DeVito; choosing a parent tree with superior attributes matters!! Want a tree with rapid growth? We have it. We have a many trees growing 6 to 7 feet per year! Looking for fall color? See the images above.
All trees are not created equal, and we mean that in a very literal sense. Tree structure, growth rate and overall health are intimately related to the root health of plants. WHAT IS AIR PRUNING? It’s a question you need to understand to appreciate why our plants are different. Simply put, air pruning is the term used to describe the natural pruning process of container plants when the roots come into contact with the air. Delve a little deeper into the subject and you’ll realize just how cool air pruning actually is…
First, we need to understand the traditional methods nurseries have employed to grow trees and the shortcomings of these methods. The two most cost effective ways to grow trees will be discussed. Trees are commonly grown in plastic pots or grown in large farm fields fields and have their roots cut with a nursery spade at harvest. One of the main problems for gardeners who cultivate in standard plastic pots is a compromised root structure. Roots tend to grow around the plastic pot into a wadded up "tornado" of roots. These roots are permanently compromised and lead to many tree problems including susceptibility to disease, early die back and quite often the death of the plant at an early age. Many times, trees grown in plastic pots can start to die within 5 to 10 years from the time that they are planted. This can lead to a complete loss of the investment of time and money in the plant. Believe it or not, some nurseries continue to grow plants in plastic pots 🤦🏼♂️ . The majority of tree nurseries grow trees in large farm fields. These plants are neatly lined in rows, living happy lives, sprawling their roots in their early years. These trees are harvested as balled and burlap trees. At harvest, up to 90% of these tree roots can be severed. Although the majority of trees make it through this process, many trees die in the years following as a result of this process. The severing of these roots kill some but not all trees, however all will unavoidably be stressed. This stress period is the reason why newly planted trees tend not to grow for the first season.
When raising trees in air pruning containers, we are able to avoid the problems associated with plastic pots and the ball
and burlap process. Air pruned roots makes healthy roots which make happy plants. Our trees do not experience transplant shock and grow the first season. Give us a call today to learn more.
